Light, solid and inexpensive, with remarkable mechanical and aesthetic properties, plastics have become the preferred alternative to other materials in many key sectors (medical, buildings, energy, transport, agri-food sector, etc.). In 70 years, annual plastic production has jumped from 2 million tonnes to 438 million tonnes and could double by 2050.

However, due to its composition and specific properties, plastic is difficult to eliminate, remains highly mobile and persistent in nature, and poses a problem for the environment and human health.

An international treaty is being negotiated since 2022 to end this major global pollution.

Since 2023, forty large corporate members of EpE shared ideas with each other in the Health & Environment Committee to identify, understand and respond to health, environmental and economic issues related to plastic pollution. This publication provides an update on the insights gained and the work carried out by companies on this issue.
